Frequently Asked Questions

The best items for creating a memory quilt are woven cottons and cotton blends. Examples of these clothing items are button down or oxford style shirts, flannel receiving blankets or pajamas, cotton swaddling blankets, and pants made out of twill, khaki, or jeans. Generally, anything that is not stretchy works best.

Knit fabrics can also be incorporated into a memory quilt. Examples of knits are onesies, t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, and golf shirts. However, they require a stabilizer to be added to avoid stretching or distortion. This changes the options for quilting patterns and adds to the time and expense of making a quilt.

Even satins, silks, rayons, and other dressy fabrics can used in a memory quilt.  Just like with knit fabrics they need to be stabilized by using an interfacing. Avoid any item that is translucent, since it will show the interfacing and potentially the batting, in the middle of the quilt. Keep in mind that anything delicate that requires dry cleaning will require that the finished quilt be dry cleaned as well.

A frayed or raggedy edge style of quilt uses the seams in the quilt to create a textured edge. Flannel is used for the backing which naturally frays when washed. The seams on the front of the quilt are hand cut to promote fraying when washed.

A modern style or clean edge is where the seams are hidden. They are sewn and pressed on the underside of each block. When the quilt is assembled the seams will be in the middle of the quilt.

Raggedy Edge Memory Quilts can vary in size from as small as a lap size to as large as a Queen sized quilt. There are two factors that will determine the size of a Memory Quilt.

  1. The amount of clothing sent.
  2. The actual size of each piece of clothing to be used.

For Example:

  • From a newborn onesie we can get two small squares, that make up the four patch blocks.
  • For a 9-18 month onesie, we can get two rectangles or four small squares.
  • From toddler shirts, we can get one large square, one rectangle, and two small squares.

The lap size quilt shown in the photo below is 35 inches wide and 42 inches in length. Essentially, 5 blocks by 6 blocks, making a total of thirty blocks. The quilt pictured had 11 large squares, 12 rectangles, and 52 small squares.

We will help you determine the size of your quilt based on the amount of clothing you have available to use.
